Canterbury Provincial Buildings - Description
The Canterbury Provincial Buildings in Christchurch are the only provincial government buildings still standing in New Zealand. Today they are open to the public, who can visit the main Provincial Council Chamber and a small museum inside another room. Built in 3 phases between 1858 and 1865, the Canterbury Provincial Buildings are a charming example of Victorian Gothic revival architecture, designed by Benjamin Mountfort, Canterbury's leading Gothic Revival architect, and built out of local materials. Today they are listed by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust.
