About Dubrovnik-Neretva County
Dubrovnik-Neretva County (Dubrovačko-neretvanska županija) is the southernmost county in
Croatia. The county is split in the middle by the seaside town of Neum in
Bosnia and Herzegovina, making the lower section an enclave. The region also includes the islands of Koločep, Korčula, Lastovo, Lopud, Mljet and Šipanand. The mainland territory is separated from Bosnia and Herzegovina by a mountain range and is connected by the rest of Croatia by the Lower Neretva Valley.
The main city in the region is
Dubrovnik, and other important cities include Korčula (birth place of Marco Polo), Metković, Opuzen and Ploče. Throughout history the area has witnessed many naval and land conflicts and yet for many centuries Dubrovnik managed to maintain autonomy and survive the swirling events that continually threatened to engulf it. Today the region is once again welcoming visitors who explore the islands, the great collection of historic sites and walk in beautiful countryside.
