Roys Peak lies at the southern end of Lake Wanaka, just west of Wanaka town in Otago on the South Island of New Zealand. This 1,578m high mountain peak is a popular walk easily accessible from the town which offers stunning views over the surrounding area, as shown in this virtual tour.
This picture shows a good view of The Peninsula in the middle of Lake Wanaka with the body of this glacial lake stretching away to the north. Just north of the ridge are Paddock Bay, Bishops Bay and Glendhu Bay, all bays on the shouthwestern reaches of the lake. Just beyond these lie The Islands at the mouth of the Matukituki River which feeds into the lake from Mount Aspiring National Park. Just east of Wanaka the lake drains into the Cultha River which flows south to Lake Dunstan.
Roys Peak is on the edge of the Harris Mountains which separate Wanaka from Queenstown. These mountains offer excellent tramping and mountaineering in the summer and skiing in the winter. Harris Mountains area famous for heliskiing, provided exclusively by Harris Mountains Heliski. The range is also home to Trebble Cone Ski area near Wanaka and Coronet Ski Area around Queenstown.
Other significant peaks in the Harris Mountains include Mount Hyde, Mount Aurrum, Centaur Peaks, Middle Peak and Mount Critchton. Wanak and Queenstown are linked by the Crown Ranges Pass via the Cardrona Valley, the highest sealed road in New Zealand.

Road: Wanaka is about 68km north of Queenstown on the 6 Highway.
Flight: Wanaka Airport with daily flights to Christchurch.

















And it really was a bit of a hike. We built up our tent in the evening at about 800m, so I could take some amazing sunrise shots that morning.
