Hrvatsko narodno kazalište (Croatian National Theatre) is the official name of several state funded theatres throughout Croatia. The largest and grandest of these theatre houses are found in Split, Zagreb, Mostar and Osijek.
HNK Split opened in 1893 and was renovated in 1920. It closed during the Italian occupation in WWII, opening again in 1945 with a play by Croatian author Mirko Bogović. In 1970 the building was almost totally destroyed by fire, opening up again after being rebuilt in 1980. Today the HNK Split hosts over 300 performances a year, and is visited by over 120,000 people.
HNK Split Festivals
In addition to regular performances, the HNK Split participates in the annual Split Summer Festival (Splitsko ljeto), which runs for 30-days between mid-July and mid-August. This festival includes a mixed variety of events, both within the HNK and outside, with open-air jazz and classical concerts, art exhibitions, theatre plays staged in public squares and modern dance performances. Some of the performances take place in Diocletian's Palace. The HNK also hosts the week long Days of Marulić (Marulićevi dani) each April, showcasing and rewarding the best playwrights and plays from the previous year.
