The Prokurative (Trg republike) is a large squre a littel to the west of Diocletian's Palace and Split Cathedral in Split. The square began being laid out in the later 19th century when Bajamonti, the mayor of Split, carried out plans intended to raise the profile and fortunes of what was then a small, provincial town. These plans were very successful, and today, Split is the second largest city in Croatia.
On the square stood the Teatro Bajamonti (Bajamontijevo theater) which opened in 1851 and was burnt down in 1889 and rebuilt in a different form. The Neo-Renaissance style west wing, now housing a hotel, was built by the architect GB Meduna, and the eastern side of Trg republike dates from the early 20th century.
Today, Prokurative forms a focal point for Split, hosting various open air concerts during the summer. It is a dramatic setting, not only for the space, but with good views out over the harbour to the south, with the Marjan hill rising to the west and the 20th century church of St Francic (Sv.France) nearby. One of the main shopping plazas in Split, Marmontova, runs along the outside of the eastern buildings.
