St John the Baptist church on Church Street in Peterborough first opened in 1407, not far from Peterborough Cathedral. The Anglican church holds regular services and at other times is open to the public, forming one of the tourist attractions in the city. Inside is a small gift shop and cafe selling locally made cakes.
Some of the highlights and points of interest for visitors to St John the Baptist church are:
- Interior of the church was restored and changed in the 19th century, during which time the galleries were removed and the East Window installed.
- 15th century octagonal font mounted on a plinth.
- 16th century Vestment cupboard in the north-west corner, built in 1569 with carvings of a Spanish crucifixion scene on the doors.
- Various Victorian stained glass windows adorn much of the church.
- Chancel screen, added in 1917, to which the rood screen was added in 1938.
- The Lady Chapel, restored in 1923, inside which is a Georgian monument to Matthew Wyldbore (1781), twice elected as MP for Peterborough.

TRAVEL DIRECTIONS AND GETTING THERE
Road: Peterborough is near the northern end of the A1(M) at the meeting of the A15, A47 and A1139 roads. It is about 37 miles north of Cambridge, 80 miles west of Norwich and 40 miles east of Leicester.
Train: Peterborough Station on East Coast Main Line, about an hour out of London
