Paço Square, also known as Commerce Square, one of the largest Squares in Europe, and one of the doors in Lisbon through the River Tagus, where before the 1755 earthquake, there was a Royal Palace and was completely destroyed. The Marquês de Pombal rebuilt the Paço Square after the earthquake, which still maintains the same aspect.

The Paço Square, one of the largest Squares of Europe, is situated beside the Tagus river in Lisbon, Portugal, where existed before the 1755 earthquake, the Royal Palace and a library which were stored 70 thousand volumes and hundreds of works of art. With the earthquake, great part the city of Lisbon was destroyed, and the Paço Square also. Marquês of Pombal, minister of King D. José, was responsible for the reconstruction of the city. It was he who rebuilt the downtown Lisbon with all those parallel and perpendicular streets. He also had to change the mode of construction of houses to prevent further earthquakes. It is due to this fact, that the low lisboeta is known as low pombalina.
The Paço Square was rebuilt with buildings of beautiful arcades that surround the square, there are some departments of Ministries the Government from Portugal and the famous coffee Martinho da Arcada the oldest of Lisbon, and one of the favorite of the great Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa.
In the center of the Paço Square is the equestrian statue of D. José, and on the north side the Triumphal Arch the August Street. This Square, also known by the Commerce Square, it has been stage of many and varied events of the Portuguese political life, today it is used for cultural events and shows.
