The town of Brantôme is one of the Dordogne's greatest treasures, situated on the river Dronne that encircles a large part of the town.

Alongside the river are these gardens with a view across the river of the Benedictine Abbey of Saint Pierre founded in 769. Built into the cliffs behind the abbey are many caves which were once adapted for use by the monks.
