Buchkogel is a 659m hill about 13km southwest of the center of Graz. The hill is covered in woodland through which run numerous paths and trails. The hill, and others in the area, are popular with locals who come here for walking, running, mountain biking and horse riding.
At the top of Buchkogel is an iron tower, known as Rudolfswarte. The tower is 11m high and has a viewing platform at the top, just above the tops of the trees, giving views back into Graz itself. Nearby, a little down the hill, is a bar and restaurant, also popular with locals.
Another higher viewpoint in the area is at the top of Schöckel (Schoeckl ), a 1,445m high mountain some 22km due north of Graz with stunning panoramic views over the surrounding countryside.
TRAVEL DIRECTIONS AND GETTING THERE
Road: Buchkogel is about 10km from the center of Graz, Florianibergasse leads up the hills off the A9 close to the junction with the A2. Park in the woods and walk.
