Lokrum Island Fortress

Photographer Description of Lokrum Island Fortress

The island of Lokrum is a 10-minute ferry ride from Dubrovnik harbour, and uninhabited except for a dozen or so peacocks. Lokrum is covered in pine woods and shaded footpaths, and by climbing to the highest point at 91 metres you will find this ancient Napoleonic fortress built in 1806.
From here there are superb views of Dubrovnik City and the surrounding coastline with the holiday village of Cavtat in the far distance.

Lokrum Island Fortress - Further Information

Fort Royale stands on the northern end of Lokrum Island (Otok Lokrum). It was built during the French Napoleonic occupation of Dubrovnik in the early 19th century. Today the fort is open to the public as one of the attractions on the island, and there are great panoramic views of the surrounding area from the viewing platform at the top.

Lokrum Island is only a 10 minute ferry ride from Dubrovnik Harbour and makes a great day trip from the city. The island is covered with pine forest which contains some 1000 year old Holm oak trees. Lokrum once housed a Benedictine abbey, founded in 1023 and absolved in 1798. Richard the Lionheart was shipwrecked on Lokrum Island in 1192. He vowed to build a church here, but the residents of Dubrovnik prevailed upon him to build the church in the Old City instead.

Attractions on Lokrum Island:

  • Lokrum Island Botanical Gardens - full of exotic plants from around the world in gardens that used to belong to the Benedictine abbey.
  • Mrtvo More (Dead Sea) - a small sea-lake with crystal clear water suitable for children with great swimming.
  • Lokrum Restaurant - a restaurant and caffe in the converted holiday home built by Austrian archduke Maximilan on Lokrum in 1859.
  • Peacocks - Lokrum island has a wild population of peacocks that roam the island.
  • Lokrum Beach - a nudist beach
Lokrum Island Lokrum is a Nature Reserve and a Special Forest Vegetation Reserve. Thankfully the island survived the ravages of recent conflict even though several incendiary grenades hit the island with the risk of devastating fire.
