Lokrum is covered in pine woods and shaded footpaths, and by climbing to the highest point at 91 metres you will find this ancient Napoleonic fortress built in 1806.From here there are superb views of Dubrovnik City and the surrounding coastline with the holiday village of Cavtat in the far distance. Lokrum Island Fortress - Further InformationFort Royale stands on the northern end of Lokrum Island (Otok Lokrum). It was built during the French Napoleonic occupation of Dubrovnik in the early 19th century. Today the fort is open to the public as one of the attractions on the island, and there are great panoramic views of the surrounding area from the viewing platform at the top.Lokrum Island is only a 10 minute ferry ride from Dubrovnik Harbour and makes a great day trip from the city. The island is covered with pine forest which contains some 1000 year old Holm oak trees. Lokrum once housed a Benedictine abbey, founded in 1023 and absolved in 1798. Richard the Lionheart was shipwrecked on Lokrum Island in 1192. He vowed to build a church here, but the residents of Dubrovnik prevailed upon him to build the church in the Old City instead.
