Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik is the principle city of Dubrovnik-Neretva County in Croatia, as shown on the map, an ancient port on the Adriatic Coast and a very popular tourist destination. It is marketed as the 'Pearl of the Adriatic' and has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Based and trade and politics, Dubrovnik grew in power to rival Venice in the Middle Ages, home to many notable poets, playwrights, painters, mathematicians, physicists and other scholars. This has all left it's mark on Dubrovnik, which today is the pride of the Croatian tourist industry, with 11 of the 18 top luxury hotels in Croatia found here.

Dubrovnick Sights, Attractions and Museums: Most of the sights and attractions are focussed around the Old Town, which is completely pedestrianised and easy to walk around. This gives Dubrovnik a very relaxed and welcoming feel, with the coastline and harbour never far away. Among the most important attractions are:

  • Bell Tower - close to the Ploče entrance to Dubrovnik, topped by 'Zelenci' (The Green Ones), bronze statues which strike the hour on the clock.
  • Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary - built on the Poljana Marin Držić and dating from the 18th century. An earlier church on the site is supposed to have been built with funds given by Richard the Lionheart after surviving a shipwreck.
  • Church of St. Ignatius and the Jesuit College - Baroque church situated on a small hill within the Old City.
  • Dominican Monastery & Museum - contains many paintings and artefacts from the past.
  • Fort Lovrijenac - built on a 37m high rock outside the walls of the city protecting both the land and sea approaches. Dating from the 11th century, preventing Dubrovnik falling under Venetian rule.
  • Franciscan Monastery - Baroque church with Romanesque cloisters. It houses the Franciscan Monastery Museum with artefacts from one of the oldest pharmacies on earth, established in 1317.
  • Orlando's Column (Roland's Column) - 15th century stone flag staff reputedly belonging to Knight Roland, site of the raising of a flag each year at the opening of the Dubrovnik Summer Festival.
  • Pile Gate - main entrance to the Lapad , the Old Town (Placa Stradun), near to Lovrjenac Fort. It used to have a drawbridge over a moat.
  • Placa Stradun - The Old Town, most of the buildings date from after the devastating earthquake of 1667. Full of narrow lanes lined with restaurants and shops. It also contains the Old Port and is surrounded by City Wall from which there are great views over parts of Dubrovnik.
  • Rector's Palace - former palace of the Major Council and now a museum to the history of Dubrovnik.
  • Serbian Orhodox Church - contains the Museum of Icons.
  • Sponza Palace - Gothic Renaissance 16th century palace that survived the 1667 earthquake. Old town custom house through which all trade passed, now houses the Sponza Palace Museum.
  • Treasury of Cathedral - contains many religious reliquaries and artefacts that are paraded through the city during the Feast of St Blaise.
Also near to the city are Lokrum Island, Banje Beach and Lapad Beach, both of which are very popular with locals and visitors alike. Dubrovnik is also a favourite starting point for sailing excursions into the Adriatic, and several charter and tour companies operate around the harbour. The islands of Elaphite islands, Korcula, Pelješac and Mljet are all within relatively easy sailing distance of the city, offering great opportunities for various water sports. 30 minutes to the south is Cavtat Bay.
