Glenfinnan Monument - Further Information

The Glenfinnan Monument stands at the head of Loch Shiel in the Lochaber area of the Highlands of Scotland. It is one of the tourist attractions around Fort William, and visitors can climb up to the top of the monument for stunning panoramic views of the surrounding area, which includes the Glenfinnan Viaduct and River Finnan valley.

The Monument was raised in 1815 to mark the place where Bonnie Prince Charlie raised the standard at the beginning of the 1745 Jacobite Rising. The prince arrived at Eriskay from France and then landed on the mainland at Loch nan Uamh just west of Glenfinnan. Here he met some of the MacDonalds and then waited until further supporters arrived from the Cameron and Macdonnell clans. On Monday 19 August 1745 Charles decided he had enough support and raised the Royal Standard on the hill, claiming both the Scottish and English thrones. The Jacobite Rising failed with the final engagement at the Battle of Culloden.

On top of the Glenfinnan Monument stands an un-named Highlander soldier wearing a kilt. The monument is managed by the National Trust for Scotland, and there is a visitor centre and cafe nearby.
