Glenfinnan Viaduct and River Finnan Valley - Further Information

Glenfinnan is a small village at the end of Loch Shiel in Lochaber area of the Highlands of Scotland. It is most well known for the Glenfinnan Monument and the Glenfinnan Viaduct and has become a popular visitor attraction near to Fort William on the Road to the Isles. Glenfinnan also hosts the Glenfinnan Highland Games and the Glenfinnan Fun Day. There are several popular walks in the hills around the area.

Glenfinnan Viaduct
The Glenfinnan Viaduct is one of the most remarkable railway viaducts in the Scottish Highlands. It was built 1897 and 1901, with 21 arches spanning a length of 416yards across the mouth of the River Finnan valley. The viaduct lies on the Fort William - Mallaig line and is now a popular tourist attraction. It often features in promotional material with the Jacobite Steam Engine crossing it. This steam train is run during the summer months and is very popular with tourists. Other passenger rail services also use the line linking Mallaig with Fort William and onwards to Glasgow.

Glenfinnan Viaduct has entered the popular conciousness through use in numerous Harry Potter films, especially in 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets' where a lengthy sequence shows the 'Hogwarts Express' crossing the viaduct on the way to the school. It also featured in 'The Prisoner of Azkaban' and 'The Goblet of Fire', as well as in other films like 'Charlotte Gray' and 'Monarch of the Glen'.



Travel Directions and Getting There:
Train: Glenfinnan Station.
Bus: From Fort William to Mallaig and Acharacle.
Road: Glenfinnan is on the A830 'Road to the Isles', 17 miles west of Fort William and 25 miles from Mallaig.
