It runs through Avila and on to Salamanca, feeding into the Douro River near Fermoselle, after travelling 284 km from here at it's source.In summertime, this river can be susceptible to drought and cause the water supply to be unpredictable, therefore in the 1960s a dam was built at Santa Teresa. This formed a reservoir which has a capacity of 496 million cubic meters and that has ensured that a sustainable and regulated water supply. Tormes River flows through many towns and villages, some of these include: Salamanca, Santa Maria de Tormes, Alba de Tormes, Guijuelo, Puente del Congosto, Navamorales, El Losar, El Barco de Avila, La Aliseda de Tormes, Angostura de Tormes and Hoyos del Espino.
