Canterbury Precincts - Further Information

Canterbury in Kent UNESCO designated World Heritage Site. An ancient city, notable for being a settlement traced back to prehistoric times and for being such a well preserved catalogue of the influences of those civilizations who left their mark in buildings, art, literature and culture.

A few minutes walk away from Canterbury Cathedral, these back streets in the old part of town show the curious mix of modern and centuries old architecture that typifies Canterbury. The guided walking tours around the city take in so many famous landmarks such as the Cathedral, the Abbey of St Augustine and St Martin's Church, two castles and six museums. Guided tours by night include the spooky Ghost Tour which creeps around these back streets, illuminated by the tour host who retells the tales of folks who once lived there. River cruises by day or by evening are a great way to take in some of the sights and enjoy the array of architectural styles of the old houses built along the river banks including the Hugenot Weavers houses. Roman influences can still be seen in places including guided walks along the surviving sections of the city walls starting at Dane John Gardens, and taking in other structures such as Queningate which were restored during the 14th century.

As a university and cathedral town, Canterbury bustles with activity. Music festivals, arts, exhibitions are regularly hosted. The Marlowe Theatre is a notable attraction for shows. The Cathedral hosts regular events from choral music to conferences. And of course, as a very popular tourist destination, Canterbury has an excellent selection of fine dining, restaurants, cafes and entertainments to suit every visitor's taste. A beautiful city which takes you back through time with all the best comforts of modern day.
